Discount Sites reach almost 10% European internet users

The arrival of Groupon to Europe caused a sharp increase in the range of discount sites. A total of 9.6 percent of all European internet users is now reached. This according to the 2010 Europe Digital Year in Review - survey of ComScore.

The number of users of a discount site rose in December last year to 34.9 million. That's an increase of 162 percent compared to the same period one year earlier. Groupon, who with the acquisition of City Deal from Germany became European market leader, reaches over 12 million visitors per month, about one third of the total market of discount sites.

Looking at the various countries in Europe, there is a visible difference in penetration of discount sites. In Frankrijk bijvoorbeeld is het bereik 20,6 procent en in het Verenigd Koninkrijk 17 procent, waar Nederland blijft steken op 7,3 procent. In France the range is 20.6 percent and in the United Kingdom 17 percent, where the Netherlands remains behind at 7.3 percent.

The study also revealed that the reach of social networking sites has grown from 73.7 percent in 2009 to 84.4 percent in 2010.

A trend that is becoming visible is that the younger generation (15-34) moves its digital activities more towards the social networks. Those aged 35 and older experiment with social networks, but also continue to use e-mail.
